The Putto appears at KomiksFEST! – announces Czech publication glory

The month of October in the land of Bohemia was indeed a productive one for The Sorrowful Putto of Prague. Following on from my appearance on Česká Televize to talk about the comic, I was hugely honoured to be asked to take part in KomiksFEST!.

KomiksFEST! is an internationally respected comic and literature festival established in 2006. Based in Prague, it supports the Czech comic underground scene as well as presenting and bringing together international artists, writers and filmmakers. This year’s event was held at the fantastic Meet Factory, a place I’d wanted to visit for years.

With the Putto’s obvious Prague and Czech relevance, I was lucky enough to be asked to present on the main stage as part of Saturday’s programme (the festival is almost a week long). I gave a short visual presentation and then had an on stage interview with Tomáš Chlud.

The session was followed by a Q&A with the audience. It was very enjoyable and I think the locals took a Welshman, living in London and writing about Prague in the right spirit!

I was even more delighted that Czech artist, and Putto team member, Lenka Šimečková was also in attendance. Lenka’s beautiful work was part of the 2015 catalogue for KomiksFEST!.

Czech publishing announcement

As exciting as this was, there was even more reason for joy as I was able to announce plans to publish The Sorrowful Putto of Prague in actual printed form in the Czech Republic. One of the country’s most respected publishers, Argo, has announced plans to print the Putto in 2016.

To accompany the announcement at KomiksFEST!, small samples of the comic were produced by Argo. This is the first officially printed Putto content. A wonderful piece of history for The Putto and something that meant a lot to me.

All hail…

Special thanks to Petra Nováková for arranging my appearance at the festival and even kindly offering to arrange some kind of special Slavic hat wearing chauffeur from the airport (which I humbly and politely declined).

Massive appreciation for the great team at Argo for their PR, printing and on the day support (with particular thanks to Petr Onufer, Richard Klíčník and Gabriela Kiszová).

Much thanks to old Summer School friends Martina Kavinová (for the amazing interpretation help on the day) and the ever reliable Petra Pémová (superb logistical and moral support).

Finally, thanks to all the friends and family who came on the day to support. It was humbling.

Czech Television debut for The Sorrowful Putto of Prague

It’s been a fantastic month for The Sorrowful Putto of Prague. Firstly, I was lucky enough to attend and speak at the excellent KomiksFEST! in Prague.

It was a real honour to be there and something I’ll be blogging about that in the very near future (along with some hugely humbling news about the Putto coming to the printed page).

The horror!

Big in Žižkov

As part of my promotional activity for Komiksfest I appeared on Česká televize (state broadcasters) to talk about The Putto. The interview was arranged by the fantastic Petr Onufer of Argo.

The interview can be watched here (link). Don’t worry if you don’t speak Czech, the main interview with me is in English as my Czech language skills not quite comprehensive enough to wax lyrical about alcoholic, depressed baroque angels. Was wonderful to see AJ Bernardo’s artwork gracing the television boxes of The Republic.

It’s hopefully the start of a very busy twelve months for The Putto in The Republic and the start of a lot of long-term dreams coming true. I’ll expand on that very shortly in my blog on Komiksfest, so be sure to come back to find our more.

CZ Television 02

That’s me in the corner, that’s me in the wine glass losing my…etc…etc

Thanks to Kateřina Bílková and Ondrej Koutsky of Ceska Televize for the piece and Petr Onufer of Argo for arranging.

Literalab is essential reading for European literature lovers

Literalab

A couple of years ago The Sorrowful Putto of Prague was featured in Česká Pozice thanks to Prague based writer and editor Michael Stein.

When The Putto website was roughly assaulted and incapacitated by evil Chinese hackers a couple of years back, we lost our original links to the interview.

Michael is editor of the fantastic Literalab. If you’ve a passion for Central European literature (or indeed great literature full stop) then you need to pay this site a visit. It really is a superb corner of the interweb for those that love words and art.

Michael followed up his original Putto feature with another one in the pages of Literalab – focusing on our ‘Hanging Man‘ story.

So if you want to find out more about the writing behind The Putto, then please take a visit: http://literalab.com/2012/04/09/exterminating-angel-an-update-on-the-comic-the-sorrowful-putto-of-prague/

Newspaper of The Glorious Republic features The Sorrowful Putto of Prague alongside The Madonna of New York

Fantastic and glorious news from The Republic.

On the 3rd day of March in the Year of Our Lord 2015, Czech national newspaper Dnes featured The Putto (link) in its cultural pages.

Dnes reporter Ondřej Bezr wrote an incredibly flattering review of our comic in which much praised was heaped on all the creators involved, the content of the comic and the heavenly music from Mr. Roger O’Donnell.

As a regular reader of this periodical, this writer was greatly pleased and much humbled to see such a thing appear in print and on the interweb pages.

To be nestled amongst features on our Lady Madonna of New York City and a sniping American hero of war only brought further honour to us.
Onwards to glory! Slávu republice!
